From a tangled MVP
to a Databricks platform
built to scale.
BI3 overhauled the MVP data platform of a leading Australian retirement living provider — eliminating redundant layers, enforcing data lineage, and delivering a scalable Databricks & DBT architecture within 4 months.

An MVP data platform that had outgrown itself.
A leading retirement-living and community services provider for elderly Australians was running a data platform that had accumulated significant technical debt. Data lineage was impossible to trace, SCD2 comparisons were missing, business transformations were duplicated across layers, and row-level security gaps left data access controls exposed. The architecture was non-standard, slow to enhance, and operationally fragile — the organisation needed a ground-up redesign to unlock scalable growth.
Simplify the architecture. Standardise everything. Scale with confidence.
BI3 led a full redesign of the data architecture on Databricks — working with the organisation's design team to strip out redundant components, adopt industry-standard practices, and deliver a unified medallion lakehouse with DBT powering every transformation layer.
Architecture redesign & medallion lakehouse
Redesigned the platform on Databricks with a Bronze / Silver / Gold medallion structure — removing superfluous layers and establishing a clean, traceable path from raw ingestion to business-level aggregates.
Multi-source system integration
Integrated 6+ source systems — Dynamics 365, Salesforce, Resource Advisor, APIs, ERP Storage, and manual files — via Azure Data Factory into a unified landing zone, replacing fragile custom ingestion scripts.
DBT transformation & data lineage
Implemented DBT for all transformation logic — delivering full data lineage, data quality enforcement, and version-controlled SQL transformations that integrate directly with Databricks’ Spark engine.
Governance, security & CI/CD
Implemented Unity Catalog for row & column-level security, Delta Lake for reliable data storage, Azure DevOps for CI/CD pipelines, and Azure IDP (Entra) with Log Analytics for monitoring and access control.
Databricks & DBT — the modern lakehouse stack, done right.
A fully integrated, cloud-native architecture connecting 6+ source systems through a governed medallion lakehouse — every transformation documented, tested, lineage-tracked, and CI/CD deployed.
Enhanced efficiency. Scalable architecture.
Delivered in 4 months.
Kickoff to production
Full platform revamp — architecture redesign, multi-source ingestion, and DBT transformation layer — delivered on time and on scope.
Source systems unified
Dynamics 365, Salesforce, ESG, APIs, ERP Storage, and manual files consolidated under one governed lakehouse architecture.
Data lineage visibility
Full end-to-end lineage from raw ingestion to Power BI — every transformation versioned, tested, and traceable via DBT.
Redundant layers remaining
All unnecessary architecture components removed — resulting in faster development cycles, simplified operations, and a platform built to grow.
